Wild Tales: Dr. Andrew Stein
September 4th,2025 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Zoo Miami Front Entry - Florida Room

Dr. Andrew Stein has over two decades of experience studying human-carnivore conflict—from African wild dogs and lions in Kenya and Botswana to leopards and hyenas in Namibia.
Andrew grew up fascinated by nature documentaries of exotic wildlife in far-off destinations. An American who grew up near Boston, the opportunities to explore and contribute to wildlife conservation seemed unlikely until his study abroad trip to Kenya through the School for Field Studies. There he saw a confluence of his greatest passions across culture, wildlife conservation and problem solving.
Motivated by a clear purpose, he was driven to return to Africa to make a contribution to the wildlife he was passionate about and the people who faced the challenges of living with their livestock among Africa’s great predators. Since his 2001 leopard study in South Africa, Andrew has become a leader in leopard conservation as he continued on for his PhD field study on leopard ecology and conservation on Namibian farmlands. In recent years he led an international team for the IUCN Red List to assess the global status of leopards. He has expanded his interests to explore non-lethal approaches to mitigate livestock conflict with lions in Northern Botswana.
Andrew has published a dozen scientific articles, organized a field training course with the Smithsonian Institution, and been featured in wildlife documentaries on National Geographic Wild and BBC Wildlife. He is also a member of both the IUCN Cat Specialist Group and an advisor to the Asian Leopard Specialist Society.

Grant Field Trips

Grant Field Trip 2025-2026

Zoo Miami Foundation is thrilled to be able to help cover the cost of your field trip. We hope your students have a memorable experience with us during their time at Zoo Miami. Our field trips provide educational and insightful opportunities for students of all ages.

As part of the grant funds, we are pleased to cover the costs of transportation to and from the zoo, as well as lunches for all participating students. However, to ensure that we are responsibly managing these donated funds and maximizing student impact, we ask that you provide us with the final number of students attending at least one week in advance. Please note, if more than two students do not attend after being counted in the final numbers, we will invoice your school $25.00 per absent student. This fee helps us offset the missed opportunity to engage another student in the wonders of wildlife.
*If you are interested in the Zoom Ahead program for Highschools please select the Zoom Ahead option as the guided tour. ( Please note the Zoom Ahead is for a max of 20 students)

*Please note that this program if forTitle One Schools only, if you would like to schuduale a field trip for school please email Education@zoomiami.org for more information.
