On 23 Jan 2019 Zoo Miami's female African Painted Dog Littlefoot gave birth to 5 puppies. Littlefoot came to us from the Audubon Zoo in Nov 2017 and is a little over 2 years old. Our male African Painted Dog, Evander is 7.5 years old and came to us from Perth Australia in Nov 2015. He has a significant limp on his front left leg due to an injury acquired in 2017. This is the first litter for both of them.
Zoo Miami participates in the African Painted Dog Species Survival Plan (SSP), which is a highly coordinated breeding program to help us better manage the Painted Dog populations in the country. Both our dogs came to us after a recommendation from the SSP. Even though Littlefoot is an inexperienced first time mom she has surpassed our expectations and is doing a fantastic job raising her pups!
